THE MEANING OF WORDS

Many words have many different meanings. And different people have differing associations to those words and their definitions.

Today the word “Hustle” was used and it conjured up a wide range of associations from the highly positive:

“To have the courage, confidence, self belief, and self-determination to go out there and work it out until you find the opportunities you want in life”

to the highly negative:

“To swindle someone”.

What factors determine our association of words?

What clues can we derive from the context and source of the use of those words?

In the context of listing positive traits that can contributed to a composer’s success which do you assume would be the intended meaning of “hustle”:

1. To swingle
2. A 1970’s dance move
3. Posing as a weak sportsman to win a gamble
4. To move hurriedly
5. Engage in prostitution
6. Working hard to purse a goal
