WHO DO YOU ASPIRE TO BE?
JIM HENSON or STATLER & WALDORF
Personally, I aspire to be a dreamer and a doer like Henson or Walt Disney. I admire those who dream big, take risks, bellyflop and rebound with great enthusiasm to keep on creating. Giants like these are among my heroes.
While I find smart-ass hecklers like Statler and Wardolf amusing in small doses, they are not heroes to me. For me, they take no risks, achieve next to nothing, and substitute cruelty for creation.
Interestingly, they were co-invented by Henson who also originally voiced Waldorf. So these cantankerous curmudgeons were a part of Henson.
I am grateful he explored and expressed that side of him. And I am even more grateful that it was only a part of a much bigger vision that he shared with the world.
When I find myself spending too much time in the proverbial balcony criticizing others, it becomes a wake-up call to me to get myself back onto the stage and start creating and being vulnerable again.
I don’t want my legacy to be built on armchair snark. I am hoping to be remembered for what I did, what I tried and who I helped and shared it with along the way.
