I recently attended the Society of Composers and Lyricists screen of MOANA.
I got there early and sat on the aisle. About a half dozen composers (all of them male) came over to me and politely introduced themselves. We engaged in conversations where they shared a bit of who they are and what they have been up to.
Being a media music composer means being part of an industry where outreach in social settings is the norm.
The entertainment industry exists largely on schmoozing.
So, shmoozing doesn’t come naturally to you?
So what?
Almost all new skills from skiing to yoga to learning French don’t come naturally.
If you want to be seen and heard in an industry where schmoozing is the primary language, learn how to get out there and do it.
Skip your excuses. Drop your distain and your judgements. They yield you nothing.
Because, while you are sitting it out, others are using the schmooze to their advantage.
