My mentor’s name was Joel Goldsmith and I think of him today more than most days because it would have been his 59th birthday. I don’t know if Joel ever intended to be my mentor but through the generosity of his spirit he shared with me a lifetime of wisdom and opened countless doors for me early in my career. I honestly don’t know where I would be today if not for the time I spent working with him.

I miss being able to call Joel up and run things by him both personal and in my career. Whatever I was going through, he had already lived it and had a unique viewpoint on the situation. He never pretended to have all the answers. He simply shared his experience and perspective and through it illuminated the path before me.

If you don’t have a mentor, go get one. And don’t forget to be one when you find yourself at the point where you have some knowledge to share. Nobody has all the answers but perspective is one of the most valuable things we have to share. Where would any of us be without the people that walked the path before us?
