Quite often I have witnessed composers take on the role of passive victim in their own lives, careers and approaches.

Frequently they see themselves on the receiving end of great injustices including the stupidity, misunderstanding and under-appreciation of others.

They feel used and exploited by penny-pinching producers and unfairly treated by tasteless filmmakers.

It is an almost endless pattern of “me vs. them” with “them” always being the victor.

This becomes a mindset that keeps getting repeated over and over and engrained as a thought pattern through repeated commiseration with fellow passive victims.

The underlying flaw in this thinking is that there is nothing the composer can do to change things.

But, we are actually the product of our thoughts.

Believing you are the hero or the victim in your own life creates either of those realities.
