#2: THE ELEPHANT MAN

Composer John Morris composed an original score for this final sequence of David Lynch’s THE ELEPHANT MAN. That got replaced by Samuel Barber’s ADAGIO FOR STRINGS.

Now is your chance to compose something beautiful and haunting to accompany this extraordinary silent sequence. Remove the Barber and add your own composition.

Let’s see what you can come up with by July 1.

OBSERVATIONS ON COMPOSER CHALLENGE #2- THE ELEPHANT MAN

Wow!

The folks at this forum really stepped it up on their demos of the final scene from THE ELEPHANT MAN.

While I have yet to hear all of the submissions (but will eventually because they are so enjoyable), those I have listened to are truly impressive.

The nature of the clip lent itself to some beautiful, haunting, bittersweet compositions.

Being a long, silent scene with very little action or movement, it allowed the composers to be extremely expressive and provide quite a bit of their own voice against such a unique canvas.

One of the obstacles was that most of the approaches were orchestral in nature. Synths tracks, unless REALLY well produced expose their artificial nature much more in this type of music. The addition of even one live player went a long way towards warming up the sound.

Very impressive, gang.
