There are a great many aspects to being a media composer beyond writing notes. Some of the components in running your own business can include music producing, scheduling, packaging, pricing, marketing, distributing, promoting, budgeting, branding, supervising, hiring, accounting, coordinating, investing, licensing, negotiating, and invoicing.
Sometimes, and often early in one’s career, these aspects of running a business are handled solely by the composer him/herself. As the composer’s business grows, they often often form a team to help them run their business that can include assistants, additional writers, lawyers, tech support, agents, managers, accountants, business managers, coordinators and publicists.
The first step of running a successful business is to acknowledge that you are running a business.
