I remember Jerry Goldsmith telling me how he viewed himself and his role as a film composer…
I’m not an artist. I’m a craftsman.
It’s like designing bookcases that go in somebody else’s home. They tell me how big, how many selves and where they go.
I then do my best to make that bookcase unique, well-designed and beautifully constructed.
But ultimately, they aren’t mine. I make them for someone else.
Goldsmith said that if he wanted to compose music for himself, he wouldn’t be working in film. He would have become a classical composer instead.
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS?
