WHO TO LOOK AT IN DETERMINING THE COURSE OF YOUR CAREER.

OK, so you’ve posted a ton of memes/threads/comment about how awful it is that other composers, the industry and the universe are devaluing composers and are ruining the industry by doing whatever horrible thing they are doing.

Once you decide you will/won’t work for free or will/won’t demo and will/won’t work long hours, what steps are YOU going to actually take to move forward?

Do you really think the only thing standing between you and getting work is some other composer “devaluing” him/herself?

Were you really the next in line on hundreds of projects that you had pursued, met on and followed-through on?

Pause, and answer honestly.

Have you really done that much work and found the source of your hundreds of rejections being some guy offering to cut a better deal than you?

Or is it that you really haven’t pursued hundreds of projects and relationships hard enough in the first place?

GREAT, you’ve identified that there are a bunch of not very nice people out there in the world, including bosses, executives and a list of yucky other people doing yucky things.

Once you decide what you will/won’t tolerate in a work environment what are YOU going to do next?

Posting about dick wads is not the same as doing anything about it. Nor is it the same as pursuing work.

Again, have you really done the hard work of pursuing hundreds of projects and relationships only to have those efforts ruined by hundreds of abusive people?

Or are you using the existence of some horrible people as your EXCUSE to not really do all that challenging work of submitting and following through on hundreds of projects and putting yourself out there in initiating and developing healthy relationships day after day after day?

WONDERFUL, you’ve painted a picture of how much greater the world of composers had it in some bygone day!

Once you accept/reject the notion of a better past, what are YOU actually going to do for yourself in present times?

What can YOU do today towards your career even if Bernard Herrmann could get away with being cranky decades ago or if Miklos Ross’s was better respected?

AFTER ALL OF THAT ENERGY LOOKING AT OTHERS HAS BEEN SPENT… WHAT DO “YOU” DO NEXT?

After you’ve booed and blamed all the people you want to denounce for your situation, what are YOU going to do as your next 10, 20, 100 courses of action?

Because your denouncement of others does next to nothing towards creating opportunities for yourself.
