CHASING INSPIRATION

If you’ll permit me two posts in one week, I came across something I thought I should share. A few years ago I was asked to give a talk to a young audience in Mexico about the creative process. In retrospect the subject of being creative under a deadline may not have translated well for this particular audience but having collected a few interesting quotes in the process I thought I might share the broader points here.

WHAT IS INSPIRATION?

“The object isn’t to make art, it’s to be in that wonderful state which makes art inevitable.” – Robert Henri

1. GET ORGANIZED! – CLUTTER IN YOUR LIFE IS CLUTTER IN YOUR MIND.

“Creativity is a gift. It doesn’t come through if the air is cluttered.” – John Lennon

2. MAKE CREATIVITY A HABIT, PART OF YOUR DAILY ROUTINE.

“My future starts when I wake up every morning. Every day I find something creative to do with my life.”
– Miles Davis

3. GIVE IDEAS TIME TO PERCOLATE AND GROW IN YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS.

“It takes a heap of loafing to write a book.” – Gertrude Stein

4. GIVE UP THE NOTION THAT INSPIRATION IS AT YOUR BECK AND CALL.

“When I am ….. completely myself, entirely alone… or during the night when I cannot sleep, it is on such occasions that my ideas flow best and most abundantly. Whence and how these ideas come I know not nor can I force them.” – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

5. ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR INSPIRATION TO STRIKE.

“I think that perhaps if I had had to slow down the ideas so that I could capture them on paper I might have stifled some of them.” – J.K. Rowling

“When the creative impulse sweeps over you, grab it. You grab it and honor it and use it, because momentum is a rare gift.” – Justina Chen

6. NEVER STOP FILLING YOUR CREATIVE WELL.

“The unfed mind devours itself.” – Gore Vidal

7. DON’T OVER THINK IT.

“Art is a collaboration between God and the artist, and the less the artist does the better..” – André Gide

8. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF, NO MATTER WHAT.

“The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.”― Sylvia Plath

“It always seems impossible until it’s done.” – Nelson Mandela

9. WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, USE YOUR CRAFT.

“Inspiration is wonderful when it happens, but the writer must develop an approach for the rest of the time… The wait is simply too long.” – Leonard Bernstein

10. DON’T FORGET TO HAVE FUN!

“Creativity is intelligence having fun.” – Albert Einstein
