FOR 20 YEARS THE MAESTRO SCORED AN AVERAGE OF 19 FILMS PER YEAR!
Some of those films were quite good. Many were not. Most of his scores were utterly innovative, original, outrageous and brilliant.
I smile when I read from composers with a thimble-full of film scoring experiences early in their careers stressing about taking on a scoring opportunity , especially when they fret about the quality of those initial films.
Most films aren’t THE MISSION… even for Morricone.
Even stinkers like the caveman sex comedy, WHEN WOMEN HAD TAILS provided Morricone the opportunity to experiment and stretch his creative muscles.
As a massive fan of his body of work, I am grateful that back in the early 1960’s he wasn’t a young man hearing that the way to have “integrity” is by protecting his “soul” by doling out his precious music only under ideal conditions.
By being a film composer who composed for film EVERY DAY, YEAR-AFTER-YEAR, DECADE-AFTER-DECADE, Ennio Morricone found endless ways to develop, explore and create music that the world now has to enjoy forever.
The next time you fret about taking on a project, put it in perspective, if you were Morricone, you would still have 18 more to do that year!
