When I first started representing Alan Menken I was looking for a non-Disney, non-musical film for him to score.
I discovered an interesting film, NOEL written and directed by Chazz Palminteri starring Susan Sarandon, Penelope Cruz, Paul Walker, Alan Arkin and Robin Williams.
They had almost no money for the score, but Menken was intrigued and took it on. The scoring went great but the film BOMBED. Atomically.
But it was a great experience between Menken and Palminteri.
A few years ago Palminteri decided to turn his play (and its film adaptation) A BRONX TALE into a Broadway musical with Robert DeNiro directing. Based on his experience on the flop NOEL, Chazz approached Menken to compose it.
It opens on Broadway in December.
